Problems Starting the FlexLM License Server on the Windows 7, Vista, and Windows 2008 Operating Systems (Magic xpa 2.x)

Technical Note

This Technical Note explains how to solve certain issues when starting the FlexLM license server on newer operating systems.

Description

When starting the FlexLM license server on newer operating systems (Windows 7, Windows 2008, Vista SP2), the following problems occur:

  • The FlexLM License Server service fails to start. The following error is generated: 1053 the service did not respond to the start.

  • Increasing numbers of multiple Lmg.exe processes are seen in the Task Manager.

Solution

  1. Download the zip file attached to this topic and copy the three 32 bit or 64 bit files to the default folder: C:\FlexLM.

  2. Manually stop the FlexLM license server from System Services (set the FlexLM service status to Disabled).

  3. Delete all LMG.EXE processes that are running in the Task Manager.

Now, follow one of these procedures:

Procedure 1

  • Start the FlexLM license server manually (i.e lmgrd) by clicking lmgrd.exe from the FlexLM directory (which holds the license.dat file).
Alternatively, you can enter the following command prompt: lmgrd.exe -c c:\flexlm\license.dat

Procedure 2

  1. Start the FlexLM license server through System Services.

  2. Access the three 32 bit or 64 bit files that are supplied with this article. Copy the lmutil.exe, lmgrd.exe, and lmtools.exe files to the C:\FlexLM folder.

  3. Go to the C:\FlexLM folder and open the LMTOOLS.EXE program.

  4. Select Configuration using Services, and then click the Config Services tab. Configure the dialog box in the following way:

Path to the lmgrd.exe file: C:\FlexLM\LMGRD.EXE

Path to the license file: C:\FlexLM\License.dat

Path to the debug log file: C:\FlexLM\Log.txt

Select the Start Server at Power Up and Use Services check boxes.

  5. Click the Save Service button and exit the dialog box. This creates a new FlexLM Service 1 service, and will automatically start after restarting the system. The FlexLM license server will be disabled.
